Hope's Land of Candy, 3951 Long Beach Road, Island Park: Here's where you'll find old-fashioned candy, ice cream, milkshakes, and specialties like Waffle Sundae and Banana Splits.
"This place rocks! Amazing milkshakes, amazing ice cream sundaes and the greatest collection of old school and new candy I've ever seen," a Facebook review said. It goes on to describe the shop's interior like this: "An old soda jerk with lots of cool collectibles and even a player piano."
Herrell's in Huntington, 46 Gerard St., Huntington: This shop is a favorite of Carrie Petrocca-Aronson. She told Daily Voice "The ice cream is hand made, creamy, tasty and great selection of favors." Customer service at Herrell's is also outstanding, Petrocca-Aronson continued.
She said she went last summer on her mother-in-law's birthday, even though the shop was closed when they got there at 9, they were invited in to enjoy their ice cream treats. "We sat there and finished our ice cream until they were done cleaning."
"They are super friendly and accommodating," said Petrocca-Aronson.
Snowflake Ice Cream Shoppe, 148 W. Main St., Riverhead: Krysta Barberi told Daily Voice what she loves about the shop in a Facebook comment.
"Everything is made in-house, long-standing business. I went there as a kid and now I bring my daughter there and she is ready for college. Love that they use local ingredients and always have special flavors of the week. Hometown touches," Barberi continued.
Krisch's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlour, 11 Central Ave., Massapequa: There since 1920 this old fashioned, 50s style parlor has everything from classic ice cream sodas to crazy sundaes like The Kitchen Sink. An April Tripadvisor review by the menace of Massapequa, N.Y., says, "Great food, amazing ice cream, the staff here are so friendly and they have great 50’s music in the background. Great memorabilia, everyone here is smiling and enjoying the experience. No one is looking at there stupid iPhone. Love this joint."
Gemelli Gelato, 139 West Montauk Highway, Hampton Bays: The season opens May 17 says the store's website. "The gelato is unbelievable. Homemade! You can sit outside at the picnic tables and enjoy," said a Facebook post dated last summer.
A Google review said, "This place is low-key incredible. That "Dumpster Diver" black ice cream they had tastes as amazing as it sounds horrible. My friends all got different flavors and they loved theirs as well. It's a cute, small place in a convenient location."
Another fan on Google said, "We wait for the opening day every year and enjoy each and every bite. They have the best flavors and the owner is such a nice guy. It is so clean in there and the outside area is fantastic for the kids to run and play!"
